What Tummy Tuck Surgery Can Accomplish?

There are a number of reasons why it’s possible to experience a flabby midsection, even if you are devoted to a healthy lifestyle.  When skin has been stretched from pregnancy or significant weight gain and loss, you may see looseness in your midsection that does not diminish with exercise. A tummy tuck can provide patients with a firmer and flatter midsection, but it’s important to keep in mind what this treatment can accomplish, so you achieve the results you’re looking for.

Problems that Can be Targeted with a Tummy Tuck

• An excessive amount of sagging skin left over from a large weight loss
• Loss of skin elasticity or weakened abdominal muscles due to pregnancy
• Small fat deposits  in the stomach area
• Hereditary issues that produce an out-of-shape abdomen

Abdominoplasty helps to remove excess skin, small amounts of fat, and re-position loose, out-of-shape muscles. When considering a tummy tuck to help solve cosmetic issues with the appearance of your midsection,  consider whether your goals include weight loss and an reduction of loose skin, or removal of loose skin alone to reveal a trim shape.

What a Tummy Tuck Will Not Do

Even though tummy tuck surgery removes some fat deposits, it is not the ideal procedure for significantly slimming-down a fatty abdominal area. Liposuction is best used to remove these larger fat deposits and can help sculpt more appealing contours in problem areas, such as hips, thighs, and stomach. This procedure can be combined with a tummy tuck if both loose skin and fat build-up are concerns.

Abdominoplasty is also not a fix for abdominal stretch marks; however, any stretch marks that are present on loose skin will be eliminated if this skin is removed as a part of the tummy tuck process.

Recovering from a Mommy Makeover: What to Expect

A mommy makeover is a term used to describe a set of cosmetic surgery treatments which target issues that many mothers experience, such as loose skin in the abdomen and depleted breasts or lost breast volume. A mommy makeover is usually a breast lift, augmentation, and a tummy tuck, completed in one surgical treatment.

With grouping treatments together, many patients wonder about the recovery process and how it will differ from receiving just one cosmetic plastic surgery treatment. Typically speaking, the recovery process for most treatments at our Lubbock plastic surgery office,  including more extensive care like mommy makeovers, goes accordingly:

The Day After Treatment

After completion of your cosmetic procedure, you will feel soreness at the treatment sites and may be wearing protective and supportive garments around your breasts and abdomen. As with any surgical procedure, there will be some initial discomfort the first day after surgery, but this can be managed with proper medication and ensuring that you give yourself time to rest and recover.

The First Week after Surgery

After the passing of a week, mommy makeover patients report feeling much improved. Pain and discomfort begin to subside and some normal daily routines can be taken back up, but patients are encouraged to be careful and not lift heavy objects or over-exert themselves.

One Month After Your Mommy Makeover

After a period of about one month, patients can return to their full daily routine. At this phase, many patients are no longer wearing support garments and can get back to life as they knew it before the recovery process.

One Year after Your Cosmetic Plastic Surgery

It can take up to a year to see full, mature results of your treatment. While breasts will still be lifted and your abdomen will be free of loose skin immediately after treatment, the healing process and the natural settling of tissues can take up to a year to realize. At the one year mark, treatment results will be mature and allow you to see the fading of any surgical scars as well as renewed firmness of skin.

How Do I Start the Mommy Makeover Process?

Call our office today to schedule a consultation for a mommy makeover with our Lubbock, TX cosmetic surgeon.  We can help answer your questions and determine a treatment plan to accomplish your goals.

Breast Implants Vs a Breast Lift: Which Is Right for You?

After pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, or if age or genetics is a factor, women may find themselves contemplating cosmetic plastic surgery to change the appearance of their breasts. While there are several treatments available that can deliver results to create well-rounded and firm breasts, how do you choose which procedure is best for you?

A Breast Lift or Breast Implants?

Breasts lifts and augmentation are two of the more popular procedures for cosmetic breast enhancement. Deciding which of these will benefit you involves understanding your goals, and what each procedure can accomplish.

Breast Lift: A breast lift improves the shape of the breasts by raising them and removing loose skin, which can also increase firmness.  Breast lifts are ideal for women who are satisfied with their cup size but want to restore the shape and position of their natural breasts.

Breast Implants: Breast augmentation, or breast implants, is a procedure for women who are dissatisfied with the size of their breasts. Some women, especially after pregnancy and nursing, experience deflated breast size. Others may notice a significant cup size difference as a result of genetics. In these situations, breast implants improve the appearance and symmetry of breasts by replenishing fullness and creating balance.

Breast implants will not resolve drooping or sagging skin, and a breast lift will not increase cup size. If you are experiencing both of these issues, then breast augmentation as well as a breast lift would be highly recommended.

Is Breast Enhancement the Right Choice for You?

Only you know if breast enhancement is right for you. Breast enhancement can be life-changing and help you regain a level of confidence that you may be missing since a pregnancy or experiencing the natural aging process.  If your breasts have taken on a longer, flatter, or less-shapely appearance over the years – or if you’ve struggled with hereditary asymmetry for years, cosmetic breast surgery can help you meet your aesthetic goals. If you have questions about a breast lift or breast implants, call Dr. Eric Minns at our Lubbock, TX cosmetic plastic surgery office for assistance.

What to Expect During Liposuction

When dieting and exercise fail to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat, many people turn to liposuction. This procedure helps to remove fat cells from areas that are not responsive to healthy lifestyle choices.

There are several types of liposuction. Treatment may differ on the extent of the liposuction, or how much fat is being removed. While liposuction is often an outpatient procedure, some require an overnight stay in a hospital or treatment facility. You can expect the following during fat removal treatment with liposuction:

Before Liposuction

Prior to the surgery, patients are required to undergo a complete physical exam to determine candidacy for the procedure. Ideal liposuction patients are at healthy weights and keep up a consistently healthy eating and exercise routine. These patients benefit from liposuction to target stubborn areas of fat that have not come off, despite regular healthy choices.

On the day of the surgery, targeted areas of are marked. In addition to a local anesthesia, patients are given the option of an oral or intravenous sedative or general anesthesia for the procedure.

During and After Liposuction

During the procedure, Dr. Minns follows the marked line to make small incision. A special hollow tube, called a cannula, is inserted into the incision. About as wide as a skinny pen, the cannula is then moved back and forth to remove fat cells.

Recovery time and final results vary due to several factors, including how much fat was removed and patient cooperation with recovery instructions. In the days and weeks following your procedure, you may experience soreness at treatment sites. Typically, you will need to wear special compression garments to control any swelling and may be prescribed pain medication and antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.

When Considering Liposuction

It is important to note that while liposuction is highly effective for smoothing out troublesome areas, it is not a treatment for significant weight loss. Patients that fail to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine often experience weight gain redistributed to non-treated areas. Additionally, full results may take some time to settle and finalize.
Dr. Eric Minns can help you achieve the slimmer look you’ve been looking for with liposuction treatment in Lubbock, TX. Do I Need a Facelift? Or Fillers?

If you have sagging skin on your mid or lower face, deep wrinkles, and other cosmetic facial issues, cosmetic plastic surgery can provide you with many options to get firmer, smoother skin.  But with so many choices, finding the right treatment can be difficult. Many patients first consider a facelift to combat the effects of sagging and wrinkled facial skin, but you may not always need one.

Cosmetic dermal fillers can help treat wrinkles and deep lines, while facelifts are a more comprehensive, surgical approach to cosmetic facial treatment. When thinking about therapy for aesthetic facial issues, keep the following in mind:

Dermal Fillers vary widely in their abilities and there are dozens of trusted brands available to choose from. Fillers are capable of plumping-up loose skin, smoothing out wrinkles around your nose and mouth, and erasing forehead lines and crow’s feet. If your cosmetic problems are less severe, therapy with dermal fillers is a non-invasive way to get rejuvenated skin that’s smoother to the touch. Many dermal fillers even encourage your body to produce more of its own natural collagen, helping you keep your results for up to a year, in some cases.

Facelifts, as you likely know, are a surgical intervention for common signs of aging, such as loose skin in the mid-face, or the appearance of jowls. These more advanced aesthetic issues are best treated by repositioning tissues so they appear firmer and removing excess skin that causes jowls. Facelifts can even address issues of sagging skin on the neck or in front of the ears.

While both facelifts and fillers allow your skin to look smoother, dermal fillers are unable to remove excess skin or correct advanced cases of loosened skin.  Facelifts are typically recommended for patients who are experiencing these comprehensive aesthetic problems, or whose problem areas cannot be effectively targeted with fillers.

The best way to figure out which cosmetic facial procedure is right for you is to talk to a plastic surgeon. After you discuss your goals and concerns, your doctor will help you find treatment that is conservative and achieves the look you had in mind. If you’re wondering whether a facelift or dermal filler therapy is right for you, contact our Lubbock, TX office to speak to Dr. Eric Minns; we can help you design the treatment plan that fits your needs.

What to Look for in a Cosmetic Surgeon for Rhinoplasty

Making even minor surgical adjustments to the nose can positively change a person’s facial aesthetic. The increase in popularity of cosmetic nose surgery has made it easy to find private practices offering this treatment, however selecting the right cosmetic surgeon for your procedure is incredibly important.

Beautiful results with nose surgery require the surgeon to exhibit technical precision and efficient patient communication to understand the desired end result. For patients considering nose surgery to treat a medical condition, or to make their nose appear smoother and more aesthetically pleasing, getting the right care is essential.

In general, finding the right cosmetic surgeon to perform your upcoming rhinoplasty requires research and cross-referencing. Here are several criteria to consider when seeking the right clinic for your rhinoplasty:

Board Certification and Academic Recommendation: Starting your search by first looking into board certified surgeons. When combined with excellent academics, prestigious residencies and fellowships, membership into these organizations can indicate that a surgeon is dedicated to providing exceptional work, as well as continuously improving their abilities.

Before and After Photos: Surgical portfolios featuring multiple pictures of patients’ finalized treatment allows potential patients to visualize the surgeon’s skill in transforming the nose. These photos may also depict patients whose cosmetic concerns are similar to your own, suggesting that the surgeon has previous surgical experience with these issues. Before and after galleries help indicate what sort of results you can expect.

Former Patient Testimonials: The Internet is a great tool for discovering patient testimonials. When searching for testimonials, be sure to locate and read through patient reviews on multiple sites, to get a good idea of former patients’ experiences at certain offices. You can also ask friends and family for recommendations and comments about their surgeons, such as their ability to answer questions and concerns, as well as their bedside manner.

Positive Initial Consultation: The only person who can determine the right cosmetic surgeon for you is you. In addition to answering any questions and concerns, your cosmetic surgeon should also be able to tell you how many procedures they’ve done that are similar to your unique circumstances and walk you through your upcoming treatment. This should include what to expect and how long your specific recovery time may last.

If you’re considering enhancing your appearance with rhinoplasty, schedule a consultation with Dr. Eric Minns at his Lubbock practice today. With over 10 years of experience, Dr. Minns and his staff can help you achieve facial symmetry and stunning results.

Have you thought about a facelift, but not sure if you're ready for surgery? Well you're not the only one. This is something we hear often from both men and women.

Dr. Minns is proud to now offer Ultherapy, a non-invasive method for lifting and tightening the skin of the face, brow, neck, and décolletage. Treatment involves no surgery, no downtime, minimal discomfort and no scars.

The Ulthera System is the first and only energy-based device to receive FDA approval for non-invasive aesthetic lift. Ulthera uses ultrasound technology to heat the deeper tissues of the face and neck, which stimulates the body’s natural process of collagen production. After treatment, the collagen will continue to develop over the next several months, adding youthful volume that diminishes the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other irregularities.

Ultherapy is an excellent option for those who are not a good candidate for a facelift or patients who do not want to undergo surgery. Only one 45 to 60 minute treatment is needed to see improvement, which will continue to manifest over the next few months.

Call our office today to schedule an appointment to talk about how this breakthrough technology can help you.
